Description

Alan Price’s consummate Restless Voices comprises two sequences of poems. Wholeness is a Problem is a selection of ‘cut-ups’, poems composed from the words-and to some extent punctuation-found in letters of famous past poets, whether from excerpts of those letters or using the complete texts. This is almost a kind of randomising cross-correspondence or eavesdropping on the posthumous, an experimental technique which produces poetic serendipities, a precise form which develops the method of found texts. The second, modernistic sequence, Solutions, is equally experimental, and includes cut-up fictions and filmic dialogic sequences that are in some aspects reminiscent of the mixed-medium documentary and dramatic works of Thirties poets such as W.H. Auden, Louis MacNiece and Joseph MacLeod. Price’s ‘cut-ups’ also remind us, above all, and exceptionally, that all poets compose from borrowed words, that we have language on loan, are not in ownership of it, and that poetry often happens by accident.
