Description

My great-uncle Midshipman Philip Reginald Malet de Carteret, heir to St Ouen's Manor in Jersey saw action at the Falklands and Gallipoli on HMS Canopus, before losing his life on 31st May, 1916 at Jutland on the battle-cruiser HMS Queen Mary. He was just 18. His Australian cousin Midshipman John Malet Armstrong joined the battle-cruiser HMAS Australia in 1918 and saw no action, thus surviving to become one of Australia's most decorated WW2 Captain's. They were both born and grew up in Sydney. My great-grandfather , Captain Harold Ackroyd VC, was a 40 year old doctor from Southport, living in Royston with three young children. He served as the medical officer for the 6th Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment and was present on the Somme in 1916, winning the MC at Delville Wood and was killed at the Battle of Passchendaele in August 1917, winning the Victoria Cross. Their stories are told through their letters home and many previously unpublished photographs
