Description
John Bishop (b. 1665) was organist of Winchester College from 1695 to 1729, and of Winchester Cathedral from 1729 to 1737, the year of his death. As well as music for cathedral choirs he published two books of music for parish church choirs, in the style that has come to be known as West Gallery music. A Sett of New Psalm Tunes first appeared in 1710, and A Supplement to the New Psalm Book in 1725. The music is all in an idiom suitable for amateur choirs, and like all West Gallery music may be performed without keyboard accompaniment.
This is a practical edition of all thirteen of Bishop's anthems, and a selection of sixteen of his 51 published metrical psalm tunes. Optional keyboard accompaniments have been added. Bishop's idiom is tuneful and attractive, and his music is well worthy of performance by both church and secular choirs.
