Description
Born in Woolwich in May 1943, Alan Cox lived in the same terraced house in nearby Abbey Wood for the following twenty years. During the post-war days of rationing amid the bombsites, he watched his parents making what little money was available, ‘go round’. With a toolmaker father who loved nothing more than to make what he couldn’t afford to buy, and a highly practical mother ensuring her children never went without, inventiveness and ingenuity surrounded him. This inspiration not only rubbed off on the lad, but remained indelibly imprinted on his memory.
It was whilst swapping these memories with old school friends that triggered a ‘deluge’ of recollections, from the mighty Woolwich Ferry to the chirpy ‘cockle & winkle man.’ The result is a delightful stream of spontaneous facts, experiences and images guaranteed to bring knowing nods from those of a similar age and background, and, for younger readers, a fly-on-the-wall snapshot of a world they will never know – but maybe wish they had.
