Description
For more than eighty years the Miners' Institute (known locally as the 'Stiwt') has dominated the physical and cultural landscape of Rhosllanerchrugog near Wrexham - one of the largest communities of the North Wales coalfield. Built in 1926, largely due to the contributions of local miners, the building has welcomed royalty and the political elite, but has also provided culture and entertainment for the working people of the community. Although much work has been done on the Institutes of south Wales, few studies deal with those in the north. This book aims to redress that balance. The authors bring together a wide range of archival evidence and photographs to trace the birth, decline and eventual resurrection of a building which continues to support the cultural and communal life of Rhos.
