Description

Excerpt from Travels in the Interior of Africa

June the 26th,~ Mr. Park left Vintain, and sailed up the river, which is deep and muddy; the banks frequently covered with thickets of mangrove, and the whole of the surrounding country ?at and swampy. Thegambia abounds with fish, some species of which form excel lent food, but are totally unknown in Europe. Sharks are found in great abundance, as are alligators and the hippopotamus, or river horse. The latter might, with great propriety, be called the sea-ele hant, being of an enormous bulk, and his teet furnishing good ivory. This ani mal is equally fitted for living on land or in the water; it has short and thick legs, and cloven hoofs it feeds on fish, grass, and such.
