From the first tour to the last I have felt the need of practical information, in concrete form, of a kind which the road tourist may seek in vain in the standard guide-books. They ignore the, road route whenever there is a railway within measurable distance; and, when a Pass must needs be described because it is the sole link between two valleys, the vital questions of width, gradients, corners and surface quality are never vouchsafed a single line.
In a word, then, this volume is designed to meet a want - a want which is the more pressing now that the power and efficiency of the modern car have made England seem small, and all low land touring grounds only too familiar. If there is one place on earth where the tireless qualities of the motor-car may justify themselves, it is on the long-drawn but glorious ascent of an Alpine Pass.
