Description

Excerpt from Palestine Pilgrims' Text Society of the Holy Places Visited

The journey of Antoninus was made long before the Crusades, some of the mss. Are of the ninth century, and whilst Jerusalem was under Christian government; it must, therefore, have been made either before the date of the Persian conquest, 614 a.d., or during the eight years of Christian rule, 628-636 ad. The allusion to the Bishop (ch. I.) who knew the sufferers from the earthquake which destroyed Berytus in 551 a.d., shows that it must have taken place prior to 614 a.d.; and the remark that there was recently a school of literature at that town seems to indicate that the visit of Antoninus was shortly after the catastrophe. Tobler fixes the date at about 570 a.d., but it was probably earlier, between 560 and 570 ad.
