I beg you will consider it, not only as a proof of my anxiety to be serviceable in the station occupied, but also, as a tribute of individual regard, for those exertions which have been made, during your admi nistration of the War Department, to develope the physical character and resources of all parts of our country, - to the patronage it has extended to the cause of science,-to'' the protection it has afforded to a very extensive line of frontier settlements, by stretching our cordon of military posts, through the territories of the most remote and hostile tribes of savages, - and particularly, to the notice it has be stowed upon one of the humblest cultivators of natu ral science.
