As inquiries for the books have become more and more numerous, I have decided to entrust Messrs. Kelly 8: Walsh, Limited, Shanghai, with the work of preparing a second edition Of each book, which, I trust, will meet the requirements Of all who are interested in the history Of the early intercourse Of foreigners with the people of China. The author Of these books died at Nice in June 1891, a few days after the failure of the firm of Russell co., with which he was connected for so many years of his early life in China.
