This most to be dreaded cause of error, - a shoal upon which, I fear, many who have written upon Ireland, have made shipwreck of truth, - I endea voured to avoid, by seeking and obtaining letters of introduction to men of all opinions, of all ranks, and of all religions; and if, in adopting this course, I encountered that other difficulty, arlsmg from diversity of opinion, I trusted to be able to overcome it, by minute personal observation of the things about which this diversity of opinion existed.
