The Swedish State Institute for Race Biology, which began its activity in the year 1922, chose, as one of its first larger scientific undertakings, to carry through a new and more extensive cross~section in vestigation of the population of Sverige, using con scripts as study-material. The number investigated was 47 387, or about half the average population of men of the ages of 20 - 22 years. A further motive for such an investigation has been the circumstance that a new solid basis for anthropological comparisons between different parts of the country is absolutely necessary for the continuation of the activity of the Insti tute. Work has been begun on a large scale on race biological investigations, partly of the population of northernmost Sverige, where there is a fairly strong admixture of foreign elements, such as Finns and Lapps, and partly of the youth in other parts of the country.
