Before the Christian era, and afterwards appended to the rites and ceremonies enjoined by the Church of Rome in the darker ages of Christianity; and this more particularly as they have been the subject of serious animadversion by intelligent individuals travelling through our island. While, however, they are considered by some few intelligent Roman Catholic gentlemen in the light we have viewed them, and while one or two slight, though appar ently sincere attempts, have been made to suppress them, by some of the Roman Catholic hierarchy, the simple fact of numerous Holy Wells, Patterns.
