Description

Excerpt from The History and Traditions of Mallerstang Forest and Pendragon Castle

H ebewith I send forth another atom of English History. Encouraged by the reception given to the History and Traditions of Ravenstone dale by the people of this district, I have ventured to call their attention to an adjoining dale, difi''erent though no less interesting in the features of its history. A modern writer has said, It has often been remarked that in England, if attention is called to some little, unknown and obscure hamlet, a little research into its records will reveal to the astonishment of the interested enquirer how, in the ages long ago deceased, it was the home of great historic characters and the centre of rich historic circumstances. These words may be applied to Mallerstang Forest and Pendragon Castle. When the reader bears in mind that the dale is not more than five miles in length, he will pro bably be surprised that so much material could have been gathered together respecting so small a dale. This, however, should be said, that it contains two or three objects of special interest that a river the Eden - rises in it, and pursues its way through its bottom, receiving tributaries on its east and west. The Episcopal Chapel is of undoubted] y early date, and the Castle of Pendragon, now a ruin, would be enough of itself to invest the dale with uncommon interest. It has been my aim to obtain accurate as well as ample information, and to present it to the reader in a reliable and attractive form. I am under deep obli gatien to many contributors for different kinds of information. Perhaps the one to whom I owe the most, Mr. G. Blades, who conversed with me with great interest and animation on the social life of the inhabi tants in his early days, did not live to hear the delivery of the first lecture. He was a good - almost a typical - specimen of the statesman. He farmed his own land. He had been born and brought up in his own dale, and knew every inch of it. He was conservative in his ideas.
