Description
Excerpt from Six Months in the Apennines: Or a Pilgrimage in Search of Vestiges of the Irish Saints in Italy
In choosing the title, Six Months in the Apennines, I was in?uenced by the thought that I thus gained a certain freedom to speak of subjects outside those connected with the immediate object of my journey. I might enlarge on other memories and associations connected with the scenes I visited, besides those of these Irish teachers from the sixth to the ninth centuries; I might describe certain works of art of a much later date, whose only interest lay in their own intrinsic beauty, with which I was unexpectedly brought face to face in such out-oi-the-way places as Lammari or Brancoli, even thonfih they had no immediate connection with my subject.
