Melicertes is represented stretched on the back of a dolphin under the pine-tree (imhoof-blumer and Gardner, Num. Comm. On Paus. P. 10 so., with pl. B i-vi.) The crown of pine-leaves which was at first the prize in the Isthmian games was perhaps supposed to be made from this particular tree; for the Isthmian games were instituted in honour of Melicertes (paus. I. 44. Afterwards a crown of fig. I.-palaemon on celery was substituted, and at a still later time the dolphin under prize was again a crown of pine-leaves. See Plu 552i?) (coin tarch, Quaest.
