Excerpt from Opium-Smoking in America and China: A Study of Its Prevalence, and Effects, Immediate and Remote, on the Individual and the Nation
My attention was first called to this matter, prac tically, by the advent of a smoker at my Home for treatment. About thirty-five years of age, thor oughly educated, of marked conversational powers, and having travelled in many countries, he told me of things relating to the practice of this vice by Americans that at first excited my incredulity. Upon actual demonstration in this city, however, incredulity gave place to astonishment and full be lief, and I at once set myself to the task of ob taining full and authentic information upon the subject.
