Description
George Edmund Holt (1881-1950) was an American journalist, diplomat, and writer whose career took him from the American Midwest to the exotic crossroads of North Africa. Born in Moline, Illinois, Holt became a foreign correspondent for the Associated Press, where he distinguished himself covering one of Morocco's most turbulent political periods—the defeat and abdication of Sultan Abd-el-Aziz in the early 1900s.
During his time in Morocco, Holt gained unprecedented access to the country's political and cultural landscape, even meeting the legendary bandit-chieftain Raisuli, whose exploits had captured international attention. His journalistic excellence and deep understanding of Moroccan affairs led to his appointment as United States Consul-General to Morocco, a position that afforded him unique insights into both the colonial machinations of European powers and the rich traditions of Moroccan society.
Morocco the Piquant, or, Life in Sunset Land, published in 1914, captures Holt's vivid experiences among Morocco's diverse peoples and places during a pivotal moment in the country's history—just before the Great War would reshape the entire region. Written with the keen eye of a seasoned journalist and the cultural sensitivity of a diplomatic observer, this work offers readers an invaluable window into early 20th-century Morocco, complete with rare photographs from Holt's time there.
Beyond his diplomatic and journalistic work, Holt was an accomplished fiction writer, contributing stories to prestigious magazines including Collier's and Adventure. After his Moroccan adventures, he settled in San Diego, California, where he continued writing until his death in 1950. This book stands as both a fascinating travelogue and an important historical document of Morocco on the eve of modernity.
