Among the most important of the canals are the Lud wig''s canal in Bavaria, uniting the Danube with the Main the system connecting the Memel with the Pregel; that joining the Oder with the Elbe; the Plauen canal, con necting the Elbe with the Havel; the Eider canal, con necting the Eider with Kiel; the rhine-rhone, and the rhine-marne, in alsace-lorraine; the Baltic Sea, or Kaiser Wilhelm''s canal, begun in 1887 and opened for traffic June 19, 189 5; and several other canals in process of con struction. There are numerous lakes in Germany, but few of them are of large size. In the low northern districts there are extensive swamps and marsh-lands. Numerous springs occur chic?y in Nassau, Wiirtemburg, Baden, Bavaria, and Rhenish Prussia.
