Hier muß jedoch von vornherein bemerkt werden, daß die Frage, ob bei der ältesten Darstellung von Schlangen irgendwelche religiösen Momente mitgespielt haben und wann dieselben zum ersten Male in der Kunst aufgetreten sind, für die vorgeschichtliche Zeit kaum mit Sicherheit entschieden werden kann. Das eine jedoch mag hier vorausgeschickt sein, daß die Hau ptwurzel der bildenden Kunst, wie wir unten sehen werden, jedenfalls nicht auf religiösem Boden zu suchen ist.
