Description

Excerpt from Principles of the Interior or Hidden Life: Designed Particularly for the Considerable of Those Who Are Seeking Assurance of Faith and Perfect Love

In the first place, the life of those, who dwell in the secret place of the Most High, may be called a Hidden Life, because the animating principle, the vital or Operative element, is not so much in itself as in another. It is a life, grafted into another life. It is the life of the soul, incorporated into the life of Christ; and in such a way, that, while it has a dis tinct vitality, it has so very much in the sense, in which the branch of a tree may be said to have a distinct vitality from the root. It buds, blossoms, and bears fruit in the strong basis of an eternal stock. I am the vine, says the Savior, ye are the branches. He, that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit; for with out me ye can do nothing. This is a great mystery, but it is also a great truth. The Christian, whose life is hid with Christ in God, can never doubt, that his spiritual existence and growth originate in and are sustained in that divine source alone.
