Mr. Herbert Kynaston, one of the staff of the Geological Survey in Scotland, has studied the microscopic structure of the igneous rocks of the Lower Old Red Sandstone. And his notes are partly embodied in Chapter III. And fully given in Part II. Of the Appendix. The general petrography of the Carboniferous igneous rocks, so far as comprised in this volume, is based on the studies of Dr. F. Hatch and Professor rafts.
Part III. Of the Appendix, consisting of a Bibliography of writings in which the geology of the region described in this volume is discussed or alluded to, has been prepared by Mr.
