St. Anthony was born in Lisbon, the Capital of Portugal, August 15, 1195, thirteen years after the birth of St. Francis of Assisi. His parents being of noble extraction and virtuous, sent their loving son, Fernando, as he was called 1n baptism, to the Canons of St. Augustine to receive an edu cation suitable to their rank in society. Under the tutelage of the holy Canons his progress in science and virtue was remarkable, and when of proper age he entered amongst. Them to be beloved and revered by all. He loved prayer, silence and meditation, and with a zeal that was more than earthly; he delighted in the study of the Sacred Scriptures, and the writings of the Fathers and Doctors of the Church.
