This name, spelled in various ways, is frequently met with in the records of Massachusetts and the neighboring states.* In order therefore to avoid confusion, and to define the Scope of the succeeding papers, the writer has deemed it advisable to preface the series with a few notes upon the family in general. The hope is also entertained that these notes may be of service to genealogical stu dents, as the writer has endeavored in each case, to point out reliable sources Of information.
