An effort has been made to investigate the history Of the family previous to the emigration. In 1860, Rich ard Faxons, Of Bordeaux, France, sent a copy of a coat of arms which his father, Richard, son Of Dea. Richard6 Of Boston, Obtained in England. It was hoped that this would be of service in tracing the family in Eng land. Upon a visit to London in 1869, Hon. William Faxon of Hartford, Conn., employed John Camden Hot ten to make an investigation. Mr. Hotten found no arms recorded to the name of Faxon. He searched the Heralds' College, London; the original manuscripts of the Heralds' Visitations in the British Museum from 1520 to 1680, the rolls of arms of the orders Of knighthood; all the principal county histories and genealogical works in the British Museum Burke's Landed Gentry, Historical Account of the Common ers, and other works. The name was found in none of them. It was so uncommon in England that in the London Directory of 1869, only one instance occurred, viz., W. S. Faxon, Esq, Surgeon. The latter could give no account Of his pedigree. He had heard his father, who was a medical man, state that the family came from Cheshire. His crest was Lion (red) holding mullet, plain blue shield, with Silver bar dextra; the motto.
