Excerpt from The History and Antiquities of the County Palatine of Durham: Compiled From Original Records Preserved in Public Repositories and Private Collections
The reproduction of a work on the scale of the original edition is much too costly to attempt, therefore the illustrations and coats of arms are of necessity omitted, but the valuable pedigrees and notes by the Author are most carefully followed, as also the spell ing, capitals, and punctuation. It is not for us to re-edit Surtees, and we think subscribers will prefer an exact copy of his work to one with any alterations. In a very few cases, however, we have ventured to correct palpable printer''s errors.
The Index in the first edition was never full enough to be satisfactory, and we have, therefore, endeavoured to remedy this by compiling separate indices of events, names, and pedigrees.
It was intended to include Surtees'' interesting Preface to the entire work, but the cost of this volume, chie?y owing to the additions and corrections made to the Pedigrees, has so increased the estimated cost that his lengthy Preface must be left over for inclusion in the next volume.
