Excerpt from Records of Officers and Men of New Jersey in Wars, 1791 1815
On account of the disturbed condition of the Indian tribes on the northwestern frontiers, Congress passed an act, approved March 3, 1791, entitled An Act for raising and adding another Regiment to the Military Establishment of the United States, and for making further provision for the protection of the frontiers.
This regiment was commanded by lieutenant-colonel Commandant George Gibson, of Virginia, and a battalion of four companies of infantry, known as the New Jersey Battalion, was raised in this State under the denomination of levies, and Were called into the service of the United States for a term not exceeding six months. This battalion was in an organization known as the Second Regiment, which was a part of the command of Major General Arthur St. Clair, and took part in the action with the Indians near Fort Recovery, Ohio, November 4, 1791, commonly known as St. Clair''s Defeats The Battalion was mustered out November 19, 1791.
