Indians often raided the settlements and scalped men, women, and children with unbridled ferocity. As a defence against these savage attacks and to protect the women and children, block houses surrounded by palisades were built, to which set tlers ?ed when danger threatened.
As the number of settlers increased, Montgomery county was divided into separate counties whose boundaries were Often changed, large counties made smaller and new counties formed. The counties were divided into districts and the districts into towns, or townships. The Mohawk district included Fort Hunter and Caugnawaga, afterward called the towns of Mohawk and Florida. It was 35 miles from Albany, and began to be settled by the Dutch and Germans in 1650. Canajoharie included Cherry Valley, now in Otsego county, and Harpers field, now in Schoharie and Delaware counties. Palatine, north of Mohawk River, included Stone Arabia, and German Flats near the town of Herkimer. Later, Schoharie and Otsego counties were formed from Albany and Montgomery counties. In 1790, when the first U. S. Census was taken, there were only seventeen counties in New York State.
