Excerpt from Descendants of Joseph Greene, of Westerly: Also, Other Branches of the Greenes of Quidnesset, or Kingston, and Other Lines of Greenes in America
IN the summer of 1889, while Visiting in Alfred Centre, N. Y., the writer was shown an old autograph album compiled nearly fifty years ago. In it I at once recognized the autograph of my great-grandfather, written at the age of eighty-four, and with it a lock of his iron-gray hair. Before this I had known only his name. I resolved to know more. This book is the result of the interest then and there awakened.
At first it was my purpose to trace the line from the immigrant founder down to Joseph' of Westerly, and then to enlarge and include all his descendants, carrying the female line, however, only one remove. This purpose has been carried out with few exceptions, but meanwhile so much material has been gathered regarding collateral lines of this great family that many urgent requests have come from members of the family to include this also. I have therefore arranged this material systematically, and added it in twelve Appendices.
The family name will be found spelled both G7€€72€ and Green without apparent reason. Undoubtedly the original spelling in Rhode Island was Greene. Many branches of the family have dropped the final e, and in this book I have endeavored to follow their own custom, though not always with success, especially when the information has been obtained through a third party.
