There is no more gratifying proof of the increased interest now being taken in English history than the attention which is paid by students and teachers to its industrial and social aspects. I have tried to include within the pages of the present work such an outline of the nation's development along social and industrial lines as should, in my opinion, be read by all young students as part of their work in history, and I am not without h0pe that it may also prove acceptable to the ever-increasing number of general readers who are interested in the subject.
