Description
Pirandello is of the same importance for modern drama as Strindberg Brecht and Beckett. One of the most influential playwrights he challenged conventional theatre by highlighting the strained relationship between theater and reality. In one of his most famous plays six characters are first imagined but subsequently abandoned by their author. This cast of imaginary family members interrupts the rehearsals of a small provincial theatre company in an attempt to play out their family drama. In Henry IV a young man believes himself to be the Holy Roman Emperor. He is being treated for this delusion and ends up disastrously. The Mountain Giants is Pirandello's last work and it shows his narrative style shifting towards the mythical and the make-believe. The line between reality and fiction starts to blur as well. The play reflects its author's growing fear that art will lose its importance under a fascist regime.
