Description
In the spring of 1917, as the United States enters the Great War, two college roommates find themselves on opposite sides of a sudden divide. One is eager to join the fight and prove his patriotism; the other questions whether war can ever be justified and hopes to finish his studies first. When a close friend receives a Navy commission, the eager roommate enlists at once, leaving the reluctant one to wrestle with duty, friendship, and conscience.
Soon the two young men trade campus life for the rigorous routine of a naval training station. Stripped of civilian comforts and thrown together with recruits from every walk of life, they learn seamanship, discipline, and the meaning of service as an ocean war looms. As they drill, study, and wait for orders that may send them to sea, each must discover what he is willing to risk for country and for one another.
