Songs of the Shire

Songs of the Shire is a collection of 65 poems and lyrics celebrating the landscapes, places and people of Herefordshire and the Wye Valley.

Inspired by a lifelong connection with the county, Thomas Hughes captures the character of a landscape shaped by winding rivers, wooded hills, ancient pathways, orchards, farmland and quiet villages. From the banks of the Wye, Lugg and Frome to the hills around Woolhope, the streets of Hereford, Ledbury and Ross-on-Wye, and the hidden corners of the countryside in between, the collection celebrates both familiar landmarks and places that might otherwise be passed without a second glance.

Nature runs throughout the book. Bluebells and wild garlic brighten woodland floors; kingfishers flash above the water; skylarks rise over open fields; curlews call across the countryside; orchards move from spring blossom to autumn fruit; and the changing seasons transform the landscape from the first light of morning to winter snow and starlit skies.

Alongside these observations of the natural world are echoes of Herefordshire’s history, heritage and folklore. Ancient stones, old bridges, churches, hill forts, quarries, traditional orchards and local legends become reminders of the generations who have walked these paths before us and the stories that remain written into the land.
