Description

The museum on the Prado opened in 1819, and for its first years what a visitor could know about the paintings was what this kind of catalogue told them. Luis Eusebi, its first curator, lists the pictures room by room with their attributions as the gallery then gave them — attributions that later scholarship has revised, sometimes drastically, which is precisely what makes the list valuable. It records a collection at the moment it became public: what had been brought down from the royal palaces, what was thought worth hanging, and by whom each canvas was then believed to have been painted. This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1828 Madrid edition, reproduced in full from a library copy. The historical text is reproduced without modification; only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
