Description
Northeye Medieval Village near Bexhill-on-Sea in Sussex, England flourished in the 13th and 14th centuries as a mixed economy settlement. Its people were farmers, salt makers and sailors of the Cinque Ports. This illustrated book examines the birth, life and death of this village, its relationship with the sea and the wider community of islands in the vast Pevensey Marshes.
The book's main argument is that more archaeology should be carried out at Northeye and across the greater expanse of Pevensey Marshes to determine how much social cooperation there was in medieval salt-making production. The dietary and religious aspects of salting food are also discussed.
