Description

Jorge Isaacs (1837-1895) published María in 1867 and it became, almost at once, the novel every literate household in Spanish America owned. Efraín returns from school to his family's estate in the Cauca valley, loves his cousin María, is sent to England to study, and comes back too late. The plot is the least of it: what carries the book is the landscape — the river, the heat, the slaves and the mountains — rendered with a precision that made Colombians see their own country as a subject. It has never been out of print in Spanish, and it is where Latin American fiction begins to sound like itself. This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1867 edition, reproduced in full from a library copy. The historical text is reproduced without modification; only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
