Description
Cesare Ripa's Iconologia describes, in alphabetical order, how to represent the virtues, vices, passions, arts and abstract ideas as human figures — their dress, attributes and gestures, with the classical sources behind each. It became the standard repertory of allegory for European artists for two centuries. This is the editio princeps, printed in Rome by the heirs of Giovanni Gigliotti in 1593, before the woodcut figures were added in 1603. This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1593 edition, reproduced in full from a library copy. The historical text is reproduced without modification; only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
