Description
‘I like to believe that ghosts exist but I know that, when they do, they exist in my mind, emerging to haunt the present. Never coalescing into shape or form, they nevertheless insinuate themselves into my present reality, changing my perception of what is ‘there’’
In this book of photographs, Mark McGranaghan explores how our imagination can transform the real world around us, changing the meaning of what we see. When memories are triggered by what’s out there, when we create narratives about what we see, or when past trauma is activated by our present reality, the ‘real world’ can be experienced differently.
The images in this book are metaphors for these transformations. Subjects that are normally familiar and benign and unremarkable are differently imagined. The familiar is made strange and the real world and an imagined world coexist.
It may be argued that all photographs occupy a space between reality and imagination. Photographs are imbued with an aura of truth when it comes to representing reality – if it was photographed, it was there. Every photograph however is the result of a multitude of choices by the photographer to construct a reality that is intended for communication to the viewer. Photographs are both windows to the reality that existed, and mirrors of the reality imagined by the photographer.
