Description

Henriette Davidis's Praktisches Kochbuch was the standard German cookbook of the nineteenth century, found in nearly every German household and carried by emigrants across the Atlantic. This English edition, compiled and adapted for the United States by the Milwaukee publisher C. N. Caspar, gives German dishes as cooked in America at the turn of the century — soups, roasts, sauces, dumplings, cakes and preserves, with American weights and measures — and is a document of the German-American kitchen at its height, before the First World War. This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1904 edition, reproduced in full from a library copy. The historical text is reproduced without modification; only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
