Description

Coffee Table Book of: The Sport of Wrestling is a large-format coffee table book of wrestling, printed edge to edge in colour, one picture to a page and the widest carried across two: shoes, singlets and headgear, the mat and its circles, quiet practice rooms, wrestlers seen from far off, training, and the room through the seasons and the hours.

It opens with the shoes and the kit: plain high-tops on a pale bench, a shoe on its side showing the grip of its sole, laces crossing through their eyelets, a white shoe beside a black one and a kit bag tucked beneath a small bench.

Then the mat and its circles: an empty hall seen from high with one circle far off on the mat, a low view toward the curved boundary, the centre seen from directly above, a rolled mat standing on end, the layered edge of a roll, tape along a seam and three circles in a row in a huge hall.

Then the quiet rooms: a small bench beside an empty mat, padded walls below a high window, a patch of window light on the mat, the empty room in a wall mirror, a stopwatch with a blank dial, a whistle on a bench, and a table and two chairs beside a distant mat in a bare hall.

Then wrestlers seen from far off, anonymous in plain kit: two standing apart inside one circle, a low ready stance, a first grip of hand and wrist, a lone wrestler repeating a stance, one kneeling at the edge beside his shoes, two walking toward the centre, a coach standing between two wrestlers and a handshake at the end of practice.

Then training: a padded dummy on the mat, a heavy training bag, an old leather medicine ball, a pair of dumbbells, a low wooden box, an elastic band, a slow lunge, a seated stretch and a wrestler skipping.

Short notes run through the book, on the kit, the mat, the room and its changing light, and the first moves of practice: the close pattern of grip on the sole of a wrestling shoe, a rolled mat that shows its thickness, a low stance that brings the hands nearer to the mat, and the first connection, made through the hands.

Printed in full colour on heavy 150gsm coated paper at 216 x 279 mm (8.5 x 11 inches), as a paperback.
