Description

Coffee Table Book of: The Sport of Shooting is a large format book of target shooting, printed edge to edge in colour, one picture to a page and the widest carried across two: target rifles, pistols and shotguns, paper targets and clays, the ranges and clay fields empty from first light to night, the kit being made and cared for, the old days of the sport, and a few shooters seen far off in plain dark clothing.

The kit is laid out plain: a match air rifle and a small bore rifle seen from above, an air pistol, a carved walnut grip, an over and under shotgun broken open on the grass, cartridges and a cartridge pouch, choke tubes, a spotting scope, ear defenders, a stiff canvas jacket, a padded glove, a kneeling roll, a hand thrower, a cleaning rod with its brush and patches, a stack of orange clays and a paper target with a tight group of holes at its centre.

The making and care follow a walnut block carved into a stock, checkering cut into the grip by hand, a finished stock with its pot of oil, clays pressed and cooling in a quiet factory and an old shot tower by a river. The past runs from a painted wooden target board, a glass target ball and an old spring trap to black clays of the early days, a leather cartridge bag, a baize lined case, an old village shooting house and old target frames left to the meadow.

Short notes run through the book, on the rifles, pistols and shotguns, how the ranges and clay fields work, and the long history of shooting at a mark: small bore matches are often shot at fifty metres, the targets set in a row across the range, a clay cartridge holds a few hundred small pellets, which spread into a cloud as they fly, most clay shotguns have two barrels, one stacked above the other, opened at a hinge to load, and a tight group of holes in the centre shows a steady hold and an even squeeze of the trigger.

Printed in full colour on heavy 150gsm coated paper at 216 x 279 mm (8.5 x 11 inches), as a hardcover with the art printed on the case.
