Description

Coffee Table Book of: Snowboarding is a large format visual study of snowboarding in colour: boards, bindings and boots, halfpipes and terrain parks, powder fields and high ridges, board materials and care tools, and small riders in mountain settings.

The kit is laid out plain on the snow: a whole board seen from above and from the side, a single binding with its highback and straps, laced boots and a boot with a dial, goggles, a helmet, mittens, a splitboard with climbing skins, a beacon, probe and shovel, and a pack with a board strapped on.

Studies of board materials move from poplar planks to glued core strips, fibreglass cloth and a plastic base sheet. Care tools include a waxing iron and an edge file, with a binding disc shown separately. Historical forms appear as a wooden board with a rope at its nose, a swallow tail and rubber foot straps, alongside carved wooden goggles, snowshoes, wooden skis, a rope tow, a single lift chair and a rough halfpipe with shovels.

The settings range from winter dawns to moonlit nights and from spring thaw to a summer glacier: a halfpipe at first light, under floodlights and at sunset, a terrain park at dawn, groomed corduroy, a chairlift in fog, a bowl under a full moon, cornices, gullies, avalanche paths, pillows and wind lips. Small riders appear in scenes of carving, jumping, rail sliding and climbing.

Short notes run through the book, on the parts of the board, how it is made and cared for, and the snow and mountains riders seek out: a snowboard is one wide board with both feet bound across it, so the rider stands sideways, a typical strap binding holds the boot with an ankle strap and a toe strap, a tabletop jump has a flat top between the takeoff and the landing, and a snowboard can leave a broad, winding track through fresh powder.

Printed in full colour on heavy 150gsm coated paper at 216 x 279 mm (8.5 x 11 inches), as a paperback.
