Description

Coffee Table Book of: Dogs is a large-format coffee table book about dogs, printed edge to edge in colour, one picture to a page and the widest carried across two. Most show a dog out of doors, and a few stand alone on a plain ground.

It opens with the breeds of Britain and Ireland: a rough-coated Irish Wolfhound on a windswept headland, a West Highland White Terrier among yellow gorse, a mahogany-red Irish Setter in golden stubble and a grey Scottish Deerhound in a frosty glen.

Then those of continental Europe: a black-and-tan German Shepherd on a pine forest floor, a smooth red Dachshund by a burrow, a black Standard Poodle in a full, natural coat of curls, and white-and-gold Borzois at the edge of a birch forest.

Then those of the Americas and Australia: a fawn Chihuahua with large upright ears, a hairless black Xoloitzcuintli, an Alaskan Malamute in a wide frozen valley and a blue-speckled Australian Cattle Dog on red earth.

Then the puppies: tricolour Beagle puppies asleep in a heap, their eyes still closed, a Basset Hound puppy with its long ears trailing in the grass, a wrinkled Shar-Pei puppy among fallen cherry blossom and a German Shepherd puppy with one ear up and one flopped over.

Then coats and colours: a white Komondor hung to the ground in heavy cords, a harlequin Great Dane, a blue merle Australian Shepherd, and black, yellow and chocolate Labradors on a beach.

Then running, playing and resting: a Greyhound at full gallop along the sand, young Whippets in play bows among buttercups, a Malamute curled asleep in the snow with its tail over its nose and a shaggy Bearded Collie rolling on its back in long summer grass.

Toward the end, the seasons: a golden Cocker Spaniel among bluebells, a black Newfoundland wading through summer surf, a silver-grey Weimaraner under autumn birches, a red Shiba Inu among fallen maple leaves and a red-and-white St Bernard on a wide snowy pass.

Short notes run through the book. They are about dogs rather than about the pictures: when a puppy's eyes first open, where the Xoloitzcuintli gets its name, the Great Dane's real homeland, and what the Komondor's long felted cords are thought to protect it from.

Printed in full colour on heavy 150gsm coated paper at 216 x 279 mm (8.5 x 11 inches), as a hardcover with the art printed on the case.
