Description

Coffee Table Book of: Crystals is a large format book of crystals and minerals, printed edge to edge in colour, one picture to a page and the widest carried across two: single specimens laid on plain ground, close views of bands and hidden needles, stones that glow in the dark, and the caves, streams and desert slopes where they are found.

Quartz takes many forms here: a clear crystal pointed at both ends, smoky and citrine points, rose quartz, a phantom, golden rutile needles and amethyst from a small cluster to a tall geode. Beside them sit purple and green fluorite, brassy pyrite cubes, orange wulfenite, red vanadinite, blue azurite with green malachite, pink rhodochrosite, sky blue celestine, watermelon tourmaline, aquamarine, emerald, ruby, topaz and a rough diamond.

The native elements appear as they grew: a worn gold nugget, gold leaves in white quartz, curling silver wire, copper branching like a fern, bright sulfur crystals and an etched slice of iron meteorite crossed by silver bands.

Under ultraviolet light in a dark room, calcite glows red, fluorite violet blue, glassy opal green and sodalite orange, while one rough rock shines green and red at once.

A geode lies on a desert slope at sunrise, and others open to purple, blue and white hollows. Crystals line a hollow in a lava cliff, a pocket in pale granite and a cave passage of gypsum blades; sulfur crusts a steaming vent, agate glows on wet sand, and gold settles in a mountain stream beside an old sluice, a hand balance and a pan.

Short notes run through the book, on how crystals grow and take their colours, the metals found pure in nature, and the minerals that glow under ultraviolet light: fluorite often grows as near perfect cubes with flat faces and sharp corners, wulfenite grows as thin square plates, often bright orange and almost see through, celestine is named for its pale sky blue colour, and tourmaline crystals often carry fine grooves running along their length.

Printed in full colour on heavy 150gsm coated paper at 216 x 279 mm (8.5 x 11 inches), as a hardcover with the art printed on the case.
