Description
Coffee Table Book of: Christmas Sweaters is a large-format coffee table book about the Christmas sweater, printed edge to edge in colour, one picture to a page and the widest carried across two. It goes tradition by tradition, from Shetland and Norway to Aran and the novelty jumper, and then to the wool and the needles.
It opens with the Christmas sweater: a red and white star sweater folded at the end of a long table, a cream sweater with a deep red yoke on a green wall, a stack in red, green, cream and navy, and reindeer on a dress form.
Then Norway: black and white Selbu stars, one seen close, a Setesdal sweater flecked with single white stitches, a neck edged in red and green embroidery, a navy sweater with red shoulders beside old wooden skis, a Fana cardigan over a chair, grey wool with a white yoke of reindeer, and a cream cardigan on a windowsill before a snowy forest.
Then Iceland and the Faroes: a round yoke in white, black and brown, shaggy horned sheep in a snowy field, a black cat asleep on a folded sweater, and brown and white stars on a stone ledge by a window onto sea cliffs. Then Sweden and Finland: a fine yoke in shaded blue, green and lilac, a dark red jacket, a red Korsnas sweater with a broad bright yoke, and grey wool with a band of wine red diamonds.
Then Estonia and Latvia: a dark blue Kihnu troi in small white and red motifs, and cream wool with red eight-pointed stars and navy diamonds. Then Aran: cream cables, honeycomb and diamonds filled with moss stitch, a cardigan with wooden buttons, and plaited cables seen close.
Then the novelty sweater: a Christmas pudding with holly, fir trees hung with pompoms, a white reindeer among stars, and a stack of matching sweaters from large to very small. Then wool and colour: a spinning wheel, skeins in red, blue, yellow and green, and a red skein on a wooden swift. Then on the needles: a yoke of red and white stars half knitted and a small pinned sample.
Short notes run through the book. They are about the sweaters, their wool and their names, rather than about the pictures: where many of the names for Shetland wool's natural colours come from, what kofte means in Norwegian, how Finland's Korsnas sweater combines knitting and crochet, and where the Aran jumper takes its name from.
