Description

These are ordinary letters: an official chasing a shipment of barley, a man asking after his household, an order about boats and canal work, complaints, instructions, reproaches. They were written on clay in Akkadian during the reign of Hammurapi and the century around it, and they are among the earliest correspondence of daily business that survives anywhere.Arthur Ungnad (1879-1945) was one of the finest Assyriologists of his generation, and he gives here what such a volume must give: the hand-copied cuneiform text of each tablet, plate by plate, so that any later scholar can check him. The hundred and four plates are the substance of the book — they reproduce the tablets of the University Museum in Philadelphia as drawings, which for a broken clay surface remains more legible than any photograph. With introduction, transliteration and commentary. This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1915 Philadelphia edition, reproduced in full from a library copy. The historical text is reproduced without modification; only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
