Description
This book explores the essence and nature of God as presented in the Qur’ān, and reexamines the relationship between God and the human being through both the written and the manifested Qur’ān. Its aim is to revive vitality and life within the self after the emptiness and fragmentation it has endured in estrangement from its Lord—believing Him to be at the farthest point in the cosmos, above the seventh heaven—while He declares: “Indeed, God is with us” and “Indeed, my Lord is with me; He will guide me.” God affirms that He is in companionship with the human being, even in the most intimate details of private life.
The book analyzes some of the names and attributes of God, the modes of supplication to Him, the ways of remembering Him, and His revelation in the Qur’ān. It demonstrates that God speaks to humankind without exception, through multiple means, and that His connection with humanity is unbroken. It examines the meaning of fujūr (immorality) and taqwā (God-consciousness) as two fundamental programs within the self, unpacks the dilemma of good and evil, and discusses aspects of the meaning of the nafs (self) and the rūḥ (spirit), including the analysis of their qualities, attributes, and origin. It also explores the concepts of humans, jinn, Iblīs, Satan, and Adam as essential elements for human awareness of the truth of existence—particularly in our societies, which live in darkness under a prevailing traditional culture that has overwhelmed the self to the point of worshiping it as a false deity (ṭāghūt), dominating and subjugating it through imposed concepts of how God should be worshiped.
As if we were incapable of guiding our own selves!
