The Roman empire, at this epoch, extended from the river Euphrates in the East, to the Atlantic Ocean in the West. In length it was more than three thousand miles; in breadth it Was more than two thousand, and the whole included above sixteen thousand square miles. This vast extent of territory lay be tween the twenty-fourth and fifty-sixth degrees of northern lat itude, which being the most eligible part of the temperate zone, it produced all the conveniences and luxuries of life.
