The knowledge to be acquired by him who is desirous of becoming a practical musician has been amply set forth in many treatises. Few have attempted to examine how the laws of music depend upon principles of the human mind, and how that form of musical expression which is true and correct must also be that which is natural to mankind, which is conformed to human reason, and which is consequently open to universal comprehension. Researches of this character will, as a rule, find less general acceptance than if they were directed towards strengthening the powers of execution.
