A special branch of investigation and analysis in the first half of the century was in discriminating the continued fevers; one of the most active and anxious battle-grounds for practitioners and the orists since modern medicine took its rise, though eruptive and malarial fevers were well differentiated. The first to be dis criminated was typhoid, by Louis of Paris (1787 His American pupils, W. W. Gerhard (1809-72 and Alfred Stille with C. W. Pennock (1799 all of Philadelphia, and George B. Shattuck, of Boston, proved that typhoid and typhus, theretofore loosely classed together, were independent diseases.
